1. Do not sleep laying flat. Although this can be rather difficult to achieve when lying in bed, it is a better idea to raise the top half of your body by at least 6 inches so whether you do this by a moveable bed or just a few propped up pillows, this can make a lot of difference to the acid reflux symptoms that you are suffering with.
Gravity is able to work its magic when you are upright, keeping the stomach acid where it should be while allowing the digestion process to work as it should. By lying down flat, there is no real way that gravity can keep the acid down so it has a chance to escape, especially if the small LES valve has been weakened that is meant to keep the acid in the stomach.
2. If you do not like to sleep in such an upright position, refrain from eating for at least three hours before you go to bed. This means no peckish before bed moment and no midnight feasts as they can increase the risks of getting acid reflux symptoms. The stomach will still be full when you go to bed therefore increasing the chances of getting the acid reflux twinges and keeping you awake all night.
3. Stop eating the foods that are giving you the acid reflux symptoms. This is such a daft thing to say but is the best natural remedy for acid reflux. Keep a diary and write down what you are eating and when you are getting the twinges associated with acid reflux. By doing this you can work out which foods are causing them and then eliminate them from your diet or try to cut down.
4. If you cannot cut out certain foods or food groups that you find are giving you heartburn or acid reflux, one great natural remedy for acid reflux is to replace them as such with foods that are similar but without the same components, such as decaffeinated tea or coffee if caffeine seems to give you heartburn.
5. Last but not least, drink enough water. Water can help to sooth the acid reflux symptoms for a little while and at the same time encourages the acid to move back down the oesophagus and back into the stomach at the same time. It also helps to rehydrate you and to try and neutralise the acid within the stomach if there is too much.
