Uses and How to Use

Protonix or Pantoprazole Delayed Release Oral is a Proton Pump Inhibitor. It blocks the acid production of the stomach and is generally used for treating stomach problems like acid reflux, erosive esophagitis, and Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome.

All of which are caused by overproduction of stomach acids. The resulting decrease in the stomach’s acid content can help reduce the symptoms of heartburn.

Protonix may come in two forms. The first, comes in the form of a tablet which should be swallowed whole and should not be crushed, chewed and or split.

The other type of Protonix comes in the form of granules. These Protonix granules should be taken at least 30 minutes before a meal. The Granules should be prepared by mixing it into apple juice or apple sauce.

It should not be mixed into any other food than apple sauce or apple juice as it can affect the potency of the drug. The granules should be incorporated into a teaspoon of apple sauce and should be swallowed within ten minutes of preparation. It can also be mixed into a teaspoon of apple juice and consumed immediately.

It is important not to chew the granules in the mixtures because it can affect the performance of the drug. In some cases, the granules can be administered through a nasogastric or gastric tube. If administering through a tube, you should consult your health care professional on how to properly prepare and administer the preparation.

Precautions and Side Effects

Protonix is medically known as one among the newer releases of acid reflux prescription drugs. The use of Protonix as an acid reflux medication should be with extra care since this drug has been proven to cause adverse interactions.

Advise your attending physician if you are currently on medication for other drugs like altazanavir, nefinavir including non-prescription herbal products that may contain warfarin. The latter drugs mentioned require the presence of acid in the stomach to be effective.

Protonix should also be avoided as the prescription drug when taking other medications such as ampicillin, azole antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole) and iron supplements since the interaction between these drugs and Protonix may affect some lab tests including urine tests. Telling the doctor about any medication you are currently taking up will avoid the risks of any untoward results.

There can be symptoms like nausea, headache, vomiting, or stomach or abdominal pains. These are common symptoms, but if these persist, then you should immediately consult your doctor. Symptoms like increased blood sugar levels are very unlikely but they may appear.

You should immediately inform your doctor if ever you experience these kinds of symptoms. Serious allergic reactions like a rash, itching, swelling, dizziness and breathing trouble are very rare but if it occurs to you, then immediately seek medical attention. Medical tests can be administered regularly to monitor the side effects caused by the drug on your body.

Dosage and Storage

Like any other prescription drugs, never take a lesser or greater amount than that of the prescription as this may lead to overdose or impotency of the medication. It is a must to follow how the doctor scheduled your dosage to be. Once a scheduled dose is forgotten, take one immediately provided the period of interval is still far from the next dose.

However, if it is already near the time of the next dosage, then you should just skip the missed dosage. Never, by all means take a double dose just to catch up with the foregone dosage.

Remember, in order for you to obtain the full effect of Protonix Oral, you should follow the proper dosage and schedule. Continue the medication until the prescribed period even if you are already feeling well.

For US made Protonix oral, it should be between 68-77 degrees F. For the Canadian made, it should be stored between 59-86 degrees F. Unused portions no longer needed should not be kept for future use but instead be discarded properly.

You can stop taking any more drugs and actually cure your acid reflux using a natural home remedy! You’ll save a lot of money too…
