GERD or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease is a painful condition that is more commonly called heartburn or acid reflux. The general symptoms of the condition include a rather painful burning sensation within the chest area and despite the fact that this pain is commonly felt in the chest and called heartburn; it is actually to do with the stomach and the acid produced by this organ being released and moving up the oesophagus.
GERD medication is occasionally prescribed by a medical professional such as the doctor in order to make this condition more bearable but in actual fact the condition itself cannot be cured. The focus of GERD medication should not be on the treatment itself but actually in preventing the symptoms from worsening.

Aside from GERD medication, your doctor may decide that the following methods of making it better should be taken:
• Avoid foods that are commonly associated with relaxing the valve (LES valve) that prevents acid from being released from the stomach but allowing food to be let in to be digested. These foods may include fatty and fried foods, foods with high acidity levels and also alcoholic drinks.
• Foods or drinks that contain caffeine such as chocolate, coffee, tea and fizzy drinks.
• Eating smaller meals at a more regular basis.
• Avoiding foods that are high in acidity which can aggravate the oesophagus itself and irritate the acid. These may include certain fruits and vegetables, spicy foods and juices with high citrus fruit content.
• Lose weight if you are currently in the overweight sector or are fast approaching it. It has been reported that those that are overweight, if even by a few pounds, have more symptoms and are at a higher risk of getting GERD.
• Quit smoking. Not only can this play havoc with the GERD medication but can also relax the LES valve and therefore allowing acid to be released.
• Eating before you go to bed is a bad thing for those that suffer from GERD whether they are taking GERD medication or not. Gravity can help to play a part with stopping the acid from travelling up the oesophagus and by lying down; gravity cannot work to its best.
There are plenty of things that you can do if you are a sufferer of GERD and taking GERD medication is just one of these but ideally should not be taken for long periods of time. They are generally for short term use only and one of the most important factors to treating the condition is to make sure that the lifestyle is changed for the better.
